Anaheim, Calif., February 10, 2016 — Nowadays, a booming wave of wearable technology development is underway in the global health care industry to improve the health of patients and lower health care costs. Wearable patches, despite still being in the early stages, hold great promise with enormous potential for the future.
Covestro is committed to the medical industry, offering a range of both flexible and rigid materials to meet the demands of the wearables market. For example, Covestro creates superior material solutions for wearable patch fixation and electronics embedding technology achieved through joint developments. Covestro’s fixation material is comprised of breathable film and a gentle adhesive made with polyurethane raw materials. The fixation material offers users advanced moisture management and comfort, important features to ensure high patient and consumer acceptance. Electronics embedding technology will enable a roll–to-roll production process, significantly enhancing production efficiency and productivity.
Combining Platilon® films and the skin-contact adhesive Baymedix® A results in a thin, soft-touch surface. It is also skin friendly and non-allergenic, making it suitable for use on delicate and sensitive skin. The material’s excellent breathability ensures good moisture evaporation – enhancing the durability of the wearable patch and protecting the electronics when exposed to a wet environment. Our production know-how and capability to create custom products in various colors and thicknesses underscore our reputation for proficiency in the wound dressing industry.
By utilizing Platilon® films, sensitive electronics can be directly embedded more efficiently through the roll-to-roll or roll-to-sheet process. As the leading global thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film producer, Covestro offers manufacturers products with a wide range of property profiles to suit the needs of specific medical applications. The Platilon® film has superior melting behavior, allowing for uniform and consistent softening during the heating process and a permanently elastic bond after cooling. Due to the material’s high viscosity, electronic components can be securely enclosed for transportation and storage.
“We are committed to serving this innovative industry providing our customers with tailor-made polyurethane material solutions created through our joint developments,” said Chris Koppenborg, head – medical applications, Covestro. “Solutions based on one technology will drastically increase design options and processing efficiency while reducing the complexity of value chain cooperation with a single source.”
Covestro’s materials portfolio includes product lines well-suited for the medical industry.
- The Baymedix® product line includes a series of raw materials for hydrophilic foams, adhesives and films. In addition to wound care and medical wearables, these are well suited for coating and laminates as well as scope covers and barrier contraceptives. Baymedix® FD and CD waterborne polyurethanes enable the creation of stretchable backing films and barrier films produced via the dipping process.
- The Platilon® and Dureflex® product lines include multi-layer TPU films with superior properties, including water vapor permeability, low friction, good haptics and skin comfort. Materials from these product lines are used in various medical applications, such as wound dressings, wearables and surgical drapes.
