One World Explorer iPads feature protective polycarbonate cases
Pittsburgh, September 22, 2015 — Positioned on top of One World Trade Center – the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere – One World Observatory provides panoramic views of New York City’s most iconic sites and surrounding waters. The site, which opened in late May 2015, invites the world to See Forever™. Developed and operated by Legends, it has already become a must-see destination for locals and tourists alike.
Visitors can enhance their experience through the use of One World Explorer iPads. The iPads give users an interactive experience – enabling them to scan the skyline, click on more than 40 landmarks, then be virtually flown to the selected sites where they can both see and listen to the history, significance and drama of each location.
A plastic case helps the iPads withstand repeated use, providing protection from drops, rough handling or other damage. When searching for a tough, durable material for the case, Tanaka Kapec Design Group (TKDG) specified Makrolon® 2407 polycarbonate from Covestro LLC, formerly Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
“Of course we were looking for a material that was durable,” explained Jeffrey Kapec, principal and executive vice president, TKDG. “But good aesthetics were also very important, as we wanted the protective cases to become an attractive style element that complemented and contributed to this extraordinary One World Observatory experience.”
Makrolon® 2407 polycarbonate offers exceptional physical and mechanical properties and is proven in demanding applications. From a processing perspective, the UV-stabilized grade also offers easy release from the mold and low viscosity. Because of these attributes, this grade has been selected to form protective cases for the iPhone, MacBook Air and other portable electronic devices.
“Electronic devices have become important parts of our lives – in fact most of us reach for these devices multiple times each day. Of course, with frequent handling and use comes greater possibility of damage,” said Bruce Fine, market segment leader, Medical and Consumer Products, North America, Covestro LLC. “Our tough polycarbonate can protect these devices without diminishing the sleek style consumers have come to know and love.”
Another important element to the success of this project was collaboration. “The collaborative teamwork among Covestro field market development, product technology and TKDG were the keys to success for this program,” said Anthony Leo, field market development, Polycarbonates – Northeast, Covestro LLC. “Understanding the key insights from the beginning of the application was instrumental in moving this program forward.”
