Applications include bed-in-a-box and mattress toppers
Pittsburgh, September 30, 2015 — A typical person spends 25 years sleeping over a lifetime. It’s no wonder that people want a mattress that offers comfort and quality. With new viscoelastic foam formulations developed by Covestro LLC, a good night’s sleep is possible.
Widely used in many applications, including bed-in-a-box and mattress toppers, viscoelastic polyurethane flexible foams meet increasing demand for higher-quality foams and densities beyond the original high-density range. Building on the success of its Softcel® VE-1100 polyol, Covestro developed methylene diphenyl diisocyanate- (MDI) based formulations to meet industry requirements and consumer preferences.
New viscoelastic foams formulated with MDI achieve high airflows (>3 ft3/min), better tear strengths (>1 pli), better 90 percent compression sets (~ 5 percent or less), faster viscoelastic recovery, and better physical properties overall.
Covestro researchers will share additional details about new formulations during their presentation “Expanded formulation options for producing new viscoelastic foam grades” at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 during the during the 2015 Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Orlando, Florida. The technical paper was authored by William Gower, technical service representative; Susan McVey, manager; and Nigel Barksby, research fellow, all of the Raw Materials Flexible Slabstock Applications Development Group, Covestro LLC.
