Dallas, October 26, 2015 — Have you ever been out to your local pub to watch your favorite sports team and been unable to hear because of crowd noise? An advancement from SD4 Technologies can help solve your “loud crowd” problem. Using patented technology, tables made of SD4 Technologies’ Dakore™ lightweight laminated panels can be turned into speakers – providing you with sound right at your table.
This is just one example of what’s possible with Dakore™ lightweight laminate panels. The panels are composed of a honeycomb core wrapped in fiberglass that is then sprayed with Baypreg® polyurethane from Covestro LLC. This results in an extremely lightweight sandwich composite with good flexural and torsional stiffness.
Baypreg® – a two-component polyurethane material – also offers significant weight reduction with mechanical strength, and enables a low-emission and efficient process with short cycle times. Manufacturers may be familiar with Baypreg® polyurethane from applications in the automotive industry where it has been used in load floors for years.
Now SD4 Technologies is taking it into more diverse markets with applications that include architectural panels, audio panels, marker boards, office furniture, table tops and RV/boating components.
SD4 Technologies developed the Dakore™ lightweight laminate panel in response to a market need for a light weight yet strong and durable material for office and restaurant surfaces.
“Baypreg® polyurethane offers a reliable combination of properties for a consistently successful end product,” said Paul Platte, polyurethane systems, Covestro LLC. “The formulation of our chemistry along with the innovative processing method developed by SD4 Technologies enables customizable production of a variety of product sizes while retaining key light weight and strength properties.”
Traditional materials for table tops such as marble and stone provide a pleasing, high-quality appearance, but are typically heavy. The heavy weight of the end product requires more manpower for installation and also increases shipping costs. Particle board offers a lighter weight alternative material, but it lacks the strength-to-weight ratio needed for a number of applications.
The polyurethane composite Dakore™ panels provide strength and stiffness with reduced deflection. The panels are also lighter than particle board. In one table top application, a manufacturer realized a 165 lb. weight savings by using Dakore™ panels instead of particle board.
SD4 Technologies is capable of making large shapes – panels measuring up to 5 ft. x 10 ft. with thicknesses up to 12 in. – for applications like large library tables.
In addition to its impressive physical properties, the Dakore™ panels are available in a range of surface finishes, including laminate, wood veneer, concrete, dry erase/marker board and stone veneer, as well as a variety of edge effects.
SD4 Technologies worked closely with Covestro to bring this concept to market. Covestro provided not only its Baypreg® polyurethane but its technical expertise, production and product development support and design knowledge. According to Dave Miller, president, SD4 Technologies, LLC, “the expertise and knowledge we’ve gleaned from our collaboration with Covestro has allowed us to make a better product in a shorter time frame, and therefore, serve our customers more quickly through manufacturing efficiencies that also reduce cost.”
