Improved moisture management combined with efficient, sustainable production

Unique concept for modern wound dressings, new foam prepolymer introduced

Anaheim, Calif., February 9, 2016 — Covestro LLC is presenting its innovative Baymedix® polyurethane technology for modern wound dressings at the Medical Design & Manufacturing West (MD&M West) show, Feb. 9-11, in Anaheim, California. Foams, adhesives and films manufactured from Baymedix® materials as well as special films from the Dureflex® product portfolio enable optimal moisture management in wound dressings, critically important for improving the quality of patient care.

At the show, Covestro, formerly Bayer MaterialScience, will present its new Baymedix® FP505 prepolymer, which creates non-yellowing aliphatic foams with excellent fluid absorption and retention properties.

Modern wound dressings can be produced efficiently and sustainably from just three materials if combined appropriately. Manufacture by direct coating of adhesive-on-film or foam-on-film eliminates laminating steps and optimizes drying times, further enhancing process efficiency. This process efficiency and avoidance of solvents in manufacturing also results in more sustainable products and waste reduction. Examples of these directly casted foam/film and adhesive/film components will be on display at MD&M West.

“Our Baymedix® product portfolio has generated great interest among OEMs and converters searching for differentiated products that are efficiently and sustainably manufactured,” said Chris Koppenborg, head of medical at Covestro.

The differences are particularly pronounced when it comes to moisture management. Wound dressings made from Covestro materials are breathable, exhibit a high absorption capacity and outstanding retention. In addition, the adjustable adhesive strengths of adhesives based on Baymedix® technology make “low trauma removal” – an important issue in wound care – readily achievable.
