Cool black colors offer increased weathering performance

Covestro introduces new polycarbonate colors for high-gloss automotive exterior applications

Pittsburgh, June 21, 2016 — With large, transparent surfaces and panoramic roofs becoming increasingly popular in the automotive industry, the demand for lightweight, high-performance polycarbonates grows. Polycarbonates are not only used in the roof itself, but also in exterior trim and pillars. Polycarbonates from Covestro LLC in conjunction with siloxane coatings provide excellent properties, including transparency, high impact resistance and design freedom for these applications.

Now, Covestro has introduced a new polycarbonate that meets the evolving needs of the automotive industry. Designed for high-gloss automotive exterior applications, Makrolon® AX was developed to satisfy color homogeneity and surface quality requirements.

Makrolon® AX with high-performance coatings is the new material combination of choice for automotive exterior roof trim and pillar applications. By replacing glass with this new polycarbonate, parts can be produced in designs not previously possible. Optimized specifically for these applications, Makrolon® AX polycarbonate enhances styling and makes the panoramic roof surface appear larger with its glass-like appearance, while also hiding the bodywork structure. Automotive exterior parts made of Makrolon® AX polycarbonate should be coated and are usually used in combination with transparent polysiloxane coatings.

Covestro developed “cool black” colors to help keep the polycarbonate surface cool. Reducing surface temperature extends part life by significantly increasing weathering performance. While standard black colors absorb infrared radiation (IR) causing the component to heat up, the cool black colors allow the IR to be transmitted through the part, resulting in prolonged performance of the coating.

“The color formulation and chemistry of this polycarbonate line were tailored specifically to meet the surface quality and coating durability requirements for roof trim components,” said David Loren, glazing segment manager, Polycarbonates, Covestro LLC. “With a cool black surface, Makrolon® AX prolongs the performance of the coating system and increases weathering by 50 percent.”

The cool black colors also enable laser welding of the exterior trim’s B-surface to other components. The laser passes through the coating and the polycarbonate, but not the underlay material. As the interface heats up, melts and cools, the polycarbonate is joined to the underlay material.

This new polycarbonate grade and colors were designed to optimize the injection molding process to improve productivity and reduce costs. Now commercially available, Makrolon® AX2677 (with UV stabilization) and Makrolon® AX2675 (without UV stabilization) deliver performance and technology tailored to the needs of the automotive industry.
