Designing with light

Dynamic, modular lighting relies on polycarbonate sheet to open up new possibilities for interiors

Pittsburgh, August 9, 2016 — Architects and designers use light, color and video to transform and enrich spaces. Lighting and technology industry veterans at Lellan noticed a need for an easily controllable, modular and innovative lighting system that would provide a striking ambiance to residential and commercial environments. They set out to create a product that did just that.

The DigitalCanvas™ from Lellan offers an artistic lighting element to interior spaces by using LEDs to broadcast dynamic color, light, motion and interactivity. The building block of the DigitalCanvas™ system is the SmartTile, which can be configured to create any size DigitalCanvas™ consisting of one to 1,000 SmartTiles. The SmartTiles can be laid out in any arrangement, spacing or orientation to broadcast videos with cohesive effect. The DigitalCanvas™ is easily installed and controlled with any wireless device or PC without the need for a complicated control system or excessive cabling.

The SmartTile features a translucent Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet surface from Covestro LLC. The sheet operates as a diffuser for the LEDs that illuminate the surface. In addition to high light diffusion, Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet offers uniform light transmission and optical clarity.

“We collaborated with Lellan, providing technical assistance and guidance on material selection,” said Ken Licklider, sign and lighting segment manager, Polycarbonate Sheet, Covestro LLC. “This helped Lellan discover the unique light diffusing capabilities of Makrolon® Lumen XT that enable the SmartTile to produce the desired creative effects.”

Each SmartTile measures approximately 11.8” x 11.8” x 1.7”, allowing for easy installation without remodeling or bulky wall reinforcements. This required a lightweight material, like Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet, with LED diffusing capability to minimize hot spotting from pinpoint light.

According to Michelle Johnston, vice president of sales and marketing, Lellan: “Covestro’s material was selected due to its superior light diffusion properties and natural color. We tested many other products, including acrylic and polypropylene, but nothing compared to Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet. It emerged as the clear winner.”

Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet also offers superior durability and protection, an important quality when used in retail spaces, corporate lobbies, restaurants, bars, hotels and other interior spaces frequented by people.

The Lellan DigitalCanvas™ is currently available in the U.S. market and will soon be available globally.
