Pittsburgh, October 4, 2016 — The Minnesota Vikings kicked off the 2016 football season with a new home – U.S. Bank Stadium. Among the stadium’s unique features is a dimmable lighting system installed at the club level, where the player tunnel is located. Underneath ribbons of light, fans can cheer on the players as they exit the locker room onto the field. When designing the lighting system, Lumos Custom Lighting and Fabrication found polycarbonate sheet from Covestro LLC to be the ideal material for the project.
Lumos faced the design challenge of needing a lens material that would provide luminance uniformity in a fixture that is only 2 inches thick. Makrolon® Lumen XT LC7 polycarbonate sheet from Covestro was able to meet this key requirement while providing additional benefits.
“We worked with Lumos to provide a material that achieved the design criteria,” said Ken Licklider, sign and light segment manager, Polycarbonate Sheet, Covestro LLC. “Makrolon® Lumen XT LC7 polycarbonate sheet was the optimal choice for the 70 fixtures that complement the dramatic design in a high-profile area of the stadium.”
The lighting system is placed against a blacked out ceiling, enabling the lens to pop. Makrolon® Lumen XT LC7 polycarbonate sheet allows for close placement of LEDs to the lens and retains a minimal fixture thickness without LED imaging on the lens surface. From full brightness to low dimmed levels, the lens surface remains evenly illuminated.
According to Larry Randazzo, general manager, Lumos Custom Lighting and Fabrication, “Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet is one of the best lens materials for LED fixtures, and was the only material to provide excellent diffusing in a 2-inch thick fixture without sacrificing too many lumens.”
Specifically designed for lighting lenses, Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet features a unique combination of high light diffusion and high light transmission. In addition, the polycarbonate sheet offers superior impact strength and toughness when compared with other light diffusing products such as glass and acrylic.
