Automotive style doesn’t take a backseat, thanks to Covestro polycarbonate blend resin

Pittsburgh, October 11, 2016 — Today’s car buyers look for sleek design and high-quality styling elements. To meet this demand and stand out from the competition, automakers have begun to incorporate high-gloss, piano black surfaces into instrument panels, doors and seating. A 2016 SUV from one U.S.-based automaker, for example, features a high-gloss seatback and seat trim components made with a polycarbonate blend resin from Covestro.

Bayblend® T85 XF polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC+ABS) resin blend is an ideal thermoplastic for rich, piano black interior automotive applications – even components with large surfaces that require low-temperature ductility for passenger safety. Its high-gloss characteristics are enhanced even further when processed with the variable temperature molding (VTM) process from JVIS USA, LLC at its Benton Harbor, Michigan, facility.

VTM is a temperature control technology that heats up only the cavity tool surface rather than the entire tool during the injection molding process. With the help of this technology and high-performance materials from Covestro, it is possible to eliminate molding imperfections such as weld, flow and jet lines to produce parts with a Class A finish. Another advantage of the VTM approach is that it allows for thin design sections. Not only does this capability lower material costs, it also reduces component weight, which translates into improved fuel efficiency.

“Our advanced VTM process, together with Covestro’s polycarbonate blend material, made it possible for us to produce high-gloss seat components that are durable, attractive and commercially viable,” said Michael Houppert, vice president of business development, JVIS USA.

The VTM process is a good match for Bayblend® T85 XF PC+ABS blend resin. This material offers high melt flow characteristics, making it possible to mold a thin-wall part (2 mm) with minimal stresses, translating into considerable savings in terms of production time and expense.

Consumers will appreciate the luxurious surface. Weld lines are invisible, and a clear coat offers depth of image with scratch and mar resistance, helping to ensure components maintain their appearance from the first road trip to the last.

Of course, Bayblend® T85 XF PC+ABS blend resin offers much more than good looks: it provides outstanding impact strength, dimensional stability and heat resistance – all critical attributes for automotive components.
