Polycarbonate sheet from Covestro offers attractive, practical solutions for structure protection

High-performance materials for building and construction combine security with aesthetics and durability

Pittsburgh, October 31, 2016 — Today’s architects, engineers and contractors must balance elements of artistic design with resilient construction to create buildings that are equal parts structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing and functionally safe.

Covestro LLC, a proven supplier of high-performance materials for the building and construction industry, offers a broad portfolio of adaptable, attractive and economical solutions that satisfy the market’s need to address safety and security requirements. The company will showcase its polycarbonate sheet products at booth 510 during the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) 2016 Design-Build Conference & Expo, Nov. 2-4 in Las Vegas.

With a complete line of containment, forced entry and ballistic-rated polycarbonate products, Covestro is committed to supplying high-quality security glazing materials for commercial, public, private and government buildings. One product the company will highlight at this year’s conference is Hygard® EX, a laminated polycarbonate sheet useful for window glazing applications where security is critical.

Hygard® EX panels protect against vandalism and forced entry with their unique multilayer construction. They are the ideal choice for new construction or security-upgrade retrofits where enhanced structure design and building protection are primary concerns. Applications include gas stations, convenience stores and other cash transaction areas, as well as banks, schools, government facilities and detention and correctional centers.

Hygard® systems are based on Covestro’s virtually unbreakable Makrolon® polycarbonate sheet, a tough, durable, lightweight and transparent material that can be easily integrated into a design-build project requiring long-lasting protection and security. Makrolon® and Hygard® products don’t sacrifice the design flexibility, attractiveness and energy efficiency desired in today’s modern spaces, maintaining an aesthetically pleasing, glass-like appearance while providing forced entry and ballistics resistance.

The products are approximately 50 percent lighter than laminated glass of the same thickness and feature a hard coat that resists abrasion, chemical and graffiti attack. Unlike glass-clad products, Hygard® laminates resist spalling and white-out after repeated high force impacts, leaving a clear line of sight.
