Covestro engineer who supported historic solar-powered flight to keynote Science Fair

Paige Kassalen’s message to students: The sky’s the limit with STEM!

Pittsburgh, March 30, 2017 — Covestro LLC is dedicated to enriching the Pittsburgh region and igniting young minds through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Further expanding upon this commitment, Paige Kassalen, market analyst at Covestro LLC, will deliver the keynote address during the awards ceremony at the 2017 Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair (Covestro PRSEF), a program of Carnegie Science Center. She will speak at 9:45 a.m., Saturday, April 1. The event takes place at Heinz Field.

Kassalen will share her inspiring journey as a young female engineer, demonstrating to students that the sky is the limit with an education and career in STEM. Kassalen’s accomplishments include:

  • Representing Covestro on the historic Solar Impulse ( mission to fly around the world without a drop of fuel.
  • Providing on-the-ground support for Solar Impulse as the youngest member and only U.S. female engineer on the ground crew.
  • Being named to the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 ( in Energy.

“The need for a strong STEM workforce is growing, with studies projecting more than one million additional STEM-related jobs in the next decade,” said Jerry MacCleary, president of Covestro LLC. “Through Covestro’s support of important education initiatives, we are able to cultivate a passion in students for STEM careers — inspiring them to become the innovators of tomorrow.”

The Covestro PRSEF engages more than 1,000 students each year in grades 6 through 12 from 105 schools across southwestern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Students will present their projects March 31, and the awards ceremony will be held April 1.

In 2015, Covestro became a sponsor of Carnegie Science Center and the title sponsor of its annual science fair. This sponsorship is part of the company’s U.S. corporate social responsibility initiative, i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate), which focuses on employee volunteerism, STEM education and corporate giving.
