Anaheim, Calif., February 5, 2018 — Medical devices and health care equipment are changing dramatically, and these new applications need innovative materials to bring them to life. For almost 50 years, OEMs have depended on advanced materials and expertise from Covestro LLC to bring life-saving and life-enhancing products to the health care market.
The company’s portfolio of polycarbonate resins, blends and films, thermoplastic polyurethanes, thermoplastic polyurethane films and polyurethane-based adhesives and foams have contributed to innovations throughout the health care sector. Covestro will showcase these materials and technologies at MD&M West 2018 – the world's largest medical device design and manufacturing event.
Here’s a sneak peek at the newest material offerings and applications Covestro will highlight at its booth (#2221) during MD&M West, Feb. 6-8, in Anaheim, California:
- Covestro will introduce a new medical grade to the Makrolon® product portfolio: Makrolon® Rx3440 polycarbonate, designed for use in IV components. This grade provides superior chemical and oncology drug resistance to help prevent cracking, as well as heat resistance and impact strength, retaining its properties at elevated temperatures that may cause other plastic materials to degrade over time.
- Baymedix® materials from Covestro are utilized in skin-friendly adhesives, absorbent foams and waterborne coatings for elastic and chemical resistant backings and seamless dipped films. At MD&M West, Covestro will share new sustainable medical textile applications for Baymedix® FD103, CD104, CD102 and AD111. These waterborne polyurethane dispersions provide resistance to chemicals, water and bodily fluids; tear strength; flexibility and stretchability. Additionally, Baymedix® FD103 can also be used as the base material for innovative foams utilized in wound care or wearables. In these applications, the material provides thermo-formable, non-swelling, fast absorption and embedded electronics cushioning properties.
Several new end-use applications utilizing the company’s materials and technologies will be on display at the booth including:
- A disposable on-body delivery device from Enable Injections, Inc. that allows patients to comfortably self-administer high volume and/or high viscosity therapeutics. Components of the Enable device are injection molded with Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate and Bayblend® M850 XF PC+ABS blend.
- The Cellfina® System from Merz that utilizes Makroblend® M4000 FR PC+PBT blend in the housing of the motor module and Makrolon® 2458 polycarbonate in the sterilized disposable parts used with the system. The Cellfina® System is the only FDA-cleared, minimally invasive procedure shown to improve the appearance of cellulite for up to three years.
MD&M West attendees can visit the Covestro booth (#2221) to see these advances firsthand and to speak with the company’s medical experts, whom can help provide customer support every step of the way from material selection to product launch.
