Covestro LLC enhances materials portfolio with new polycarbonate sheet product for lighting

Materials help create lighting with outstanding performance and innovative designs

Pittsburgh, May 3, 2018 — Manufacturers depend on LEDs to provide inspiration and energy savings for their lighting products. High-quality materials from Covestro LLC that contribute to new LED lighting products will be on display at LIGHTFAIR International (LFI), the annual expo for lighting professionals.

More than 20,000 attendees will have the opportunity to visit Covestro at booth #3781 during the show, May 8-10, in Chicago. Covestro will introduce a new polycarbonate product and showcase its high-performance polycarbonate sheet for the lighting industry.

With the addition of Makrolon® Lumen XT-V polycarbonate sheet to its lighting product portfolio, Covestro has the materials to enhance lighting designs. Makrolon® Lumen XT-V polycarbonate sheet offers enhanced flammability resistance with a textured surface specifically designed for lighting lenses. The material is available in three diffusion levels and has design flexibility and outstanding performance properties. Makrolon® Lumen XT-V polycarbonate sheet is intended for use in industrial luminaires, transportation lenses, hazardous location lighting and fixtures with NEC Class 1 circuits. It has the toughness customers expect from a Makrolon® sheet product while providing outstanding flammability resistance and meeting 5VA requirements.

Covestro offers several other polycarbonate sheet products for lighting applications. Designed for lighting lenses, translucent Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet is a popular choice for LED light fixtures. The material features a unique combination of high light diffusion and high light transmission due to an optimized surface texture and advanced diffuser technologies. This polycarbonate sheet offers superior impact strength, toughness, enhanced flammability resistance and a larger service temperature range than alternative materials such as acrylic. Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet is available in a broad range of standard diffusion levels as well as a warm (LW) or a cool (LC) hue, providing designers with flexibility to maximize their products’ appearance and performance.

Another material option for use in LED light fixtures is Makrolon® DX-NR polycarbonate sheet. Like Makrolon® Lumen XT polycarbonate sheet, this translucent grade offers superior impact strength, toughness and flammability resistance when compared with acrylic and glass. Makrolon® DX-NR polycarbonate sheet was also developed for lighting lenses, but this material grade is appropriate for outdoor applications. Exterior applications are protected from surface degradation due to enhanced UV-resistance technology.

LFI attendees can visit the Covestro booth (#3781) to see and feel samples of the company’s outstanding engineered polycarbonate sheets. Materials experts will be available to answer questions about the company’s polycarbonate sheet portfolio.
