Pittsburgh, May 9, 2018 — Covestro offers a portfolio of thermally conductive (TC) polycarbonate materials that provides a solution for heat management in LED lamps or luminaires and other industry applications. With these materials, lighting manufacturers can replace the metal in heat sink applications, integrate more functions, optimize design by reducing the number of components and decrease manufacturing complexity by utilizing in-mold assembly of electronics.
Now, Covestro is extending its Makrolon® TC polycarbonate portfolio with the launch of several new grades. These materials feature a balance of conductivity and viscosity, which improves processing by reducing cycle times and energy consumption. Additionally, some grades can be processed by both injection molding and profile extrusion.
Makrolon® TC511 polycarbonate and Makrolon® TC611 polycarbonate have similar thermal conductivity values when compared to existing Makrolon® TC8010 polycarbonate and Makrolon® TC8030 polycarbonate, with improved flow to fill thin-wall parts. These grades are available in a black color and offer a lower density than conventional thermally conductive plastics.
Additionally, Makrolon® TC110 polycarbonate is a thermally conductive grade that is also electrically insulating and can be processed by injection molding or extrusion. This grade shows outstanding impact resistance when compared to other thermally conductive plastics and is white in color.
The Covestro family of Makrolon® TC polycarbonate is an alternative to other materials used in heat management applications. When compared to aluminum, these polycarbonate grades feature a significantly lower weight and the option to be integrated with other components … all while safely dissipating heat. Additional advantages of Makrolon® TC polycarbonate over other thermally conductive plastics include:

- Excellent dimensional stability over a broad temperature range
- Combinability with other polycarbonates in multi-component processing
