Second annual sustainability summit inspires local action around global U.N. Sustainable Development Goals

Pittsburgh, October 17, 2018 — Today, Covestro hosted its second annual THINC30 summit at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, where around 500 attendees gathered to help drive local action around the global United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (U.N. SDGs). Attendees represented Pittsburgh’s business, academic, nonprofit, philanthropic and engaged citizens’ communities—all of whom have a shared interest in advancing the region’s growth and prosperity.

The theme of this year’s summit was “Putting Purpose to Work in Pittsburgh: Integrating the U.N. SDGs in Thought and Action.” The event focused on creating a more sustainable, inclusive region, using the U.N. SDGs as a roadmap and corporate purpose, nonprofit mission and people purpose as drivers.

The program featured a diverse lineup of international, national and local speakers, spotlighting how businesses, organizations and individuals can and are forging partnerships to advance one or more of the U.N. SDGs. Sessions highlighted bias in media, education and housing, as well as Pittsburgh’s own “Drawdown” plan to reverse climate change. The summit also featured targeted sessions for the business and nonprofit communities.

While last year’s inaugural summit served as an introduction to the global U.N. goals, this year’s event was focused more sharply on putting those goals into action. Attendees were challenged to collaborate on key issues facing the region, such as addressing air and water quality; eradicating poverty and hunger; mitigating climate change; and fostering equity, inclusivity and diversity so that all Pittsburghers may participate in the region’s prosperity.

“THINC30 is a key component of Covestro’s philanthropy and an important way we are investing in our U.S. headquarters community,” said Rebecca Lucore, head of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, Covestro LLC. “Being able to give the Pittsburgh community an event that helps them fully participate in forging the vitality of the region and making it the best place it can be for everyone is our ultimate goal.”
